Your First Pelvic Health Physiotherapy Appointment
Written by Belinda Henry.
Taking the first step to address pelvic health concerns can feel daunting. Many people tell us they’ve been putting off making an appointment because they’re unsure what will happen, feel embarrassed about their symptoms, or have been told that what they’re experiencing is “normal.”
At Southern Coast Pelvic Health Physiotherapy & Pilates, we believe every person deserves to feel heard, understood and supported. Our goal is to provide a safe and respectful environment where you can openly discuss your concerns and receive personalised, evidence-based care.
Whether you’re experiencing bladder or bowel leakage, incontinence, pelvic pain, prolapse symptoms, pregnancy-related discomfort, postnatal concerns, or changes associated with menopause, we’re here to help you achieve your health goals with confidence.
Before Your Appointment

Before your appointment, you may be asked to complete a questionnaire about your symptoms. This helps us gain an understanding of your concerns before we meet.
You may also wish to bring:
- Any relevant scans, reports, or specialist letters
- A list of medications you are currently taking
- Your private health insurance card (if applicable)
- Your GP Medicare management plan (if applicable)
- Any questions or concerns you would like to discuss
Most importantly, come knowing that there is no judgement. Pelvic health concerns are incredibly common, and our team works with women of all ages and stages of life navigate these challenges.
Your Pelvic Health Story Matters
A significant part of your first consultation is simply having the opportunity to talk.
We take the time to understand not only your symptoms but also how they are affecting your life.
Your physiotherapist may ask about:
- Your bladder and bowel function
- Pregnancy and birth history
- Pelvic pain or discomfort
- Exercise and activity levels
- Previous injuries or surgeries
- Lifestyle factors
- Your goals for treatment
For some people, this is the first time they’ve told their story. We believe that understanding your experience is essential to providing care that is tailored specifically to your needs.

A Thorough Assessment
Every assessment is personalised and guided by your symptoms and goals.
Your physiotherapist may assess:
- Your posture and movement patterns
- Breathing and core function
- Hip, back, and pelvic mobility
- Muscle strength and control
- Factors that may be contributing to your symptoms
If appropriate, your physiotherapist may discuss a pelvic floor assessment.
This is always your choice.
Any examination is explained fully beforehand, and your consent is required at every step. If you decide not to proceed with an internal assessment, alternative assessment methods can often provide valuable information.
Our priority is that you feel comfortable, respected, and in control throughout your appointment.
Education Tailored to You
One of the things that sets pelvic health physiotherapy apart is the focus on education.
We know that understanding your body can be incredibly empowering.
Rather than simply treating symptoms, we take the time to explain:
- What may be causing your symptoms
- How your pelvic floor is functioning
- Why certain symptoms occur, including common concerns like bladder leakage, prolapse, and pelvic pain
- Factors that may be influencing your recovery
- What treatment options are available
No two women are the same, so the information and advice you receive will be specific to your individual circumstances.
When you leave your appointment, we want you to have a clearer understanding of your body and a plan for moving forward.
Personalised Treatment with Your Goals in Mind
Every treatment plan we develop is built around what matters most to you.
For one person, that may be returning to running after having a baby. For another, it may be exercising without leaking, reducing pelvic pain, preparing for birth, or simply feeling more confident in everyday life.
Your treatment may include:
- Pelvic floor muscle training and pelvic floor exercises
- Individualised exercise programs
- Breathing and pressure management strategies
- Pregnancy and postnatal rehabilitation
- Education and lifestyle advice
- Hands-on treatment where appropriate
- Pilates-based rehabilitation strategies
All recommendations are based on current evidence and tailored to your goals, lifestyle, and stage of life.
Leaving with a Clear Plan
Before you leave, you’ll have a clear understanding of:
- What we’ve found
- What it means for you
- What your next steps are
- How we can help you achieve your goals
You’ll receive practical strategies and exercises that you can begin implementing straight away, along with recommendations for any follow-up care if needed.
